Why Are American Health Care Costs So High?

In which John discusses the complicated reasons why the United States spends so much more on health care than any other country in the world, and along the way reveals some surprising information, including that Americans spend more of their tax dollars on public health care than people in Canada, the UK, or Australia. Who's at fault? Insurance companies? Drug companies? Malpractice lawyers? Hospitals? Or is it more complicated than a simple blame game? (Hint: It's that one.) For a much more thorough examination of health care expenses in America, I recommend this series at The Incidental Economist: http://theincidentaleconomist.com/wordpress/what-makes-the-us-health-care-system-so-expensive-introduction/ The Commonwealth Fund's Study of Health Care Prices in the US: http://www.commonwealthfund.org/~/media/Files/Publications/Issue%20Brief/2012/May/1595_Squires_explaining_high_hlt_care_spending_intl_brief.pdf Some of the stats in this video also come from this New York Times story: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/02/health/colonoscopies-explain-why-us-leads-the-world-in-health-expenditures.html?pagewanted=all This is the first part in what will be a periodic series on health care costs and reforms leading up to the introduction of the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, in 2014.

Rapido Furioso: Here in Argentina we have the best medicine FOR FREE,North Americca is the shame of the world, worst than south africa

ariahlauren: WHAT ABOUT POPULATION SIZE???? COMPARING THE UK OR CANADA OR AUSTRALIA OR FRANCE OR SWEDEN TO THE US IS COMPARING APPLES TO ORANGES. MEDICARE FOR ALL IN THE US WILL NOT WORK AS SUCCESSFULLY AS IT HAS IN THE OTHER COUNTRIES I'VE MENTIONED. YOU MUST CONSIDER POPULATION SIZE AND NEEDS. THE US HAS A POPULATION OF OVER 325 MILLION PEOPLE, THIS IS MORE THAN THE ENTIRE UK, CANADA, AUSTRALIA, FRANCE, AND SWEDEN POPULATION COMBINED.

Charles A Townsend: And because you need health care and meds reguardless of the cost then by not being the same cost as others countries, is gouging. American health care sucks.

Fred Donaldson: U.S. Healthcare is a racket: https://goo.gl/L8o7S3

Raghav M: Therefore the answer should be deregulation. More competition : lower prices.

Stormtrooper 83: can't afford to get sick in America! 😣 thank the gods for new zealands nhs! !! 😍👌✊ ...America is such a fascinating country....totally crazy in so many ways !

Dregge1: It's because the US is a buisness, not a community.

Gwendolyn H: * Sobbing in 2018 American Healthcare *

HEY NERDFIGHTERS IT'S ELECTION DAY GO VOTE NO EXCUSES

Unless it is no longer November 6, 2018. Then you are excused.

Ryan Pembrook: Here's the solution: just don't pay the bill. I don't pay bills that are unnecessarily high.

anon: What america lacks in healthcare, we make up for in ethnic restaurants. Boo yah..

kingogkingswoodz: The high prices come from extreme regulation. Yes taking control over it totally by government would lower costs because government can dictate any terms it wants because it has a license to kill people. Literally. But service will plummet in both availability and quality. With the lefts sort of fascist approach currently allowing for private ownership in healthcare business but having total control over that business allows for enough freesom to have the best quality and accessibility but destroys costs. Far less regulation would srop costs and imlrove availability and quality as well. Where as a socialist sort of healthcare like in canada is a disaster. Costs are still far higher in these spcialist healthcare systems then they would be a free market system. But comparing them to the sort of fascist current system in america is not comparing it to a free market but comparing it to an extremely regulated and controlled system.

Health care is NOT A RIGHT! True rights are defended not supplied.

Hopper: You''re too close to the camera and you are talking like a moron. Stop putting emphasis on words in such an odd way.

Diego Solis: I have been in Italy, Germany, Costa Rica and USA and Oh my god, your country is expensive!!!! (surprisingly Costa Rica is next in that list of countries).

mo. ack: Because it’s privatized?

TenTonNuke: Just join the military for a while. I have never had to worry about healthcare as I get everything for free. But of course the military is a socialist organization that makes sure all of its members are taken care of, so it's evil.

Eric: Very interesting, I never thought to include the admin and legal costs hospitals were required to use to recover healthcare costs from people who do not have money. This incidentally must add to further that persons health care which they cannot pay for.

When it is single payer, there are none of this.

One last but very important thing in this, the British National Health Service was introduced at a point when Britain was in great financial difficulty, immediately after the 2nd world war when there was very very poor housing, food was rationed, doctors were limited, hospitals were damaged ….. the Government of the day should be admired.

Corey Christiansen: Look up mutual aid societies. When healthcare costs started going higher they were outlawed. They were negotiating for their members which bright costs down.

bill head: I'm 68 and I can you it's political not medical.

Abhishek Bhaskar: someone should tag steven crowder or ben shapiro
